I suggest all females watch this.

*i suggest all humans watch this.

THIS SHOULD BE REQUIRED WATCHING FOR ALL HUMANS

I’m a 17 year old white guy living in middle class America. I’ve never exactly been a supporter of feminism because that kind of thing has never really affected me personally. I don’t notice it and I don’t care about it. But in nine minutes this video has made what is truly a serious problem extremely apparent. Those “why I need feminism” posts or those slut-shaming or rape culture campaigns never convince me of anything. But this video actually did I think.

tl;dr This video kicks ass, just watch it.

First let me say that I LOVE the message that this video sends. The idea of Feminism has been corrupted from it’s original form so many view it as women wanting superiority as opposed to equality. This video shows the true meaning of Feminism and the Feminist movement (which has been going on for far to long).

But I do have a slight problem with this video. Yes media is a HORRIBLE offender of gender stereotypes and unrealistic expectations. But I get the feeling that the video wants us to remove all violent video games and all movies/shows that sexualize people. As someone who grew up on violent video games, and have watch my fair share of pornography and other sexual material I don’t think they are inherently the problem. The problem is teaching kids who are exposed to these things that they are just video game or videos. That they are not a true representations of reality. I thoroughly enjoy shooter games but have never had the urge to go shoot someone. I also enjoy looking at women (and men since I’m Bi) that are attractive. This doesn’t mean I expect all women/men to being attractive in the traditional sense. I don’t treat someone who is “ugly” any differently than I treat someone who is “hot”. I love when a woman, or man, is incredibly intelligent. Being relatively intelligent myself (if I may say so), some of my favorite times are when I can have a long discussion about a variety of topics. But I still appreciate and enjoy looking at men and women that are considered “hot”. Now after saying this I don’t think that it is necessary to portray people sexually to make a movie/video/game good. I have played/watched plenty that have little or no sexualized content and loved them.

This video also only take a look at the sexism towards women. While this is a horrible problem and one that needs to be fixed, there is also sexism towards men in our society. I am constantly pounded with videos of thin, buff, and attractive men. I went through school being bullied because I was/am overweight. Even with dieting and a lot of exercise I was never thin. Men have just as much pressure to fit a stereotype as women. The video does mention this issue once, when a young boy says that he doesn’t like fitting into the misogynistic expectations that are put on him. But this is still a huge issue that is often over looked because “women have it worse”.
